Shipping JPEG XL in Chrome

The JPEG XL image format now decodes in Chrome 155; it compresses photos 30 to 50 percent better than JPEG and supports HDR, plus lossless conversion of existing JPEGs. Google rewrote the decoder in Rust, since image decoders are a prime target for attackers, and says fuzzing and AI review found no memory safety bugs. Google suggests trying it alongside AVIF for high-fidelity work.
