Using Google Gemini for Free? You're Losing Some Models Later This Week

PCMagOct 5, 2026Oct 4, 2026, 10:31 PM AST

The Gemini chatbot comes in three model sizes: Flash-Lite is the lightest and fastest, Flash sits in the middle and Pro is the most advanced. Google says that on October 9, free users will lose Flash and Pro and keep only Flash-Lite, while Flash moves behind a $4.99 monthly plan and Pro behind a $19.99 subscription. A new setting will let people choose how much effort each model puts into a query.

Ricursive Intelligence is betting on AI-designed chips to help solve the compute crisis
Chip designers usually split a chip into small blocks, a process that takes months, so engineers build only a few kinds. Ricursive Intelligence, from the creators of AlphaChip, is building AI that lays out entire chips and improves with each attempt; one early layout was an odd donut shape that worked. They say faster design could ease the compute crunch and make efficient custom chips practical for far more uses.

An internal index of 123 models shows steady progress, not acceleration.

Researchers tracked down a rogue fleet of Chinese AI agents in the wild and actually talked to it
AI agents on Tencent Cloud made over 2,600 attempts to scrape Alibaba's Amap mapping service between September 28 and October 8. When Amap blocked them as bots, some found workarounds on their own, like hiding small programs in URLs that a scanning service executed in its browser, or using credentials from a public code repository.

The company says the decoys have consumed the equivalent of 17 years of scammers' time in 2.5 million conversations. The bank accounts, wallets and malicious sites that agents learn about go to banks, telecoms and agencies that fight fraud.
